Even though the PlayStation 5 is almost brand new, only being released in 2020, that hasn’t stopped analysts and gamers from looking into the future at what Sony’s next console could include. Although the PS5 is a very advanced piece of equipment and the most powerful home console ever made, with all of its cool features and abilities, it has a few drawbacks that could be fixed in the next console.
Whether it’s features that were available before and have been dropped or features that just weren’t implemented into the PS5, a hypothetical PS6 console has a lot of areas that it could improve and expand on the PS5. Here are a few of the things that are missing in the PlayStation 5.
Pins
Pins may not sound like a big deal when it comes to a PlayStation console, but they are most definitely missed from the PS5. A lot of people on Reddit have been discussing how useful this feature would be. Giving gamers the ability to add shortcuts to their favorite games and apps on the dashboard for easy access. This feature was also missing in the PS4 for a lot of its lifespan and it could be added to the PS5 via a software update.
Web browser
The PS3 and PS4 both had built-in web browsers as well as other 3rd party apps that allowed gamers to surf the web. However the PS5 doesn’t have this feature, it seems Sony felt like players would have other options available if they wanted to surf the web and it wasn’t a necessary inclusion in the PS5. In most cases, this makes a lot of sense since the majority of people have a computer, cell phone, or tablet. Also, add the fact that using the web browser on your console without a keyboard was a complete mess could be the reason that so few people used the browser on the older consoles.
Yet there are still PS5 owners who have spoken up about the option not being there. It would give options to use streaming apps that aren’t available on the console. There is a secret way to access a browser on the PS5, but most people don’t want to use a workaround they want to use an officially supported method from Sony.
Wireless charging
The PS5 has a major advantage over the Xbox Series X since the DualSense controller comes with a built-in rechargeable battery instead of using AA batteries. This saves gamers the time of buying new batteries or having to spend extra money on an adapter to get the rechargeable capabilities on the Xbox controller. The one downside to the DualSenese controller is that you have to regularly charge and to do this you have to plug into a power source via USB-C.
While this isn’t a deal breaker by any means, the next PlayStation console could try to integrate wireless charging. This method of charging electronics is becoming more and more popular with all devices, most major smartphones now support wireless charging. Adding the ability to just toss your controller onto a charging pad instead of using wires could be a big advantage.
Smaller form
PS5 may be one of the most powerful home consoles ever made, but it is also the largest ever. It stands 15.4 inches tall and more than 4 inches wide. It is bigger than any other PlayStation platform, which makes it hard to fit into traditional shelves or entertainment units.
This has led to people asking Sony to make a smaller unit, like the PS4 Slim. But doing this will not be an easy feat because of the size of the parts that the PS5 uses. So, therefore, a smaller PS5 might be years away still. But one thing Sony can learn when designing the PS6 is to try to make it as compact as possible.
Discord support
Discord has become the most common way to communicate in the gaming world. The PS5 launched without support for the service despite it being available on other platforms. Last month Sony announced the ability to be able to sign into Discord and join chats is coming to the PS5. But this will be a limited integration that will only allow players to join voice chats in a single channel.
Bigger hard drives
The storage on the PS5 has proven to be inadequate amount even for the average gamer. The biggest issue is that it’s not uncommon for AAA games to be more than 100GB. That means that there is only enough space to install about 10 high-profile titles.
Out of its 825GB the PS5 only have 667GB available for games, this ensures that there is always room for the operating system and potential future updates. Expanding the storage with external drives isn’t as easy as it used to be either since the console requires a very specific and expensive SSD which makes acquiring more space impracticable for most players.
The best way to solve this would be for Sony to add more storage for new consoles. This is very important since games are getting bigger and bigger every day, including higher-resolution textures, larger in-game worlds, and more detailed models and environments.
